Think Green.

This Spring,  moxii is thinking GREEN!

That’s right you heard it- moxii is going green — but in a new kind of way.   In conjunction with East Alabama Living Magazine and Homeworks of Alabama, moxii will be involved in the first ever Alabama Power EarthCents home. *

This year’s East Alabama showcase home meets industry standards for an energy efficiency home.  The best part is —-drum roll please—– it is located right here in East Lake Subdivision in Auburn, Alabama!

So we’re thinking green around here, — but not exclusively green— because we have added a dash of blue, definitely some citron,  a row or two of antique nail heads,  a little sparkle here and there and the tiniest bit  of—— well  how about you take a peek at our progress?

So many choices, where to start?!

Ahhh, much better!

Stop by moxii to take an even closer look. We will be sure to keep you posted on our installation.

The East Alabama Living  Show Home will be open to the public from June 2 -10.

Fall Inspiration: For the Table & Mantle

We love Pinterest! Do you? With the new season in full swing, we are loving using Pinterest as a way to keep up with all of our wonderful inspirations as we browse our favorite blogs and sites.

One of our favorite ways to decorate for fall is by using gourds and pumpkins. A collection of gourds is a beautiful base for any fall decoration, and you can use them in wonderful recipes when the time comes.  Ten to twelve gourds combined with fall foliage can become an elegant but natural centerpiece or mantle decoration.

Also, keeping your fruit bowl stocked with fall fruits and veggies can be an item of decor for your kitchen counter or table.

The Gray & Chocolate Dilemma

Gray is one of the hottest trends, so of course you want to add this elegant yet natural color to your home. However, what do you do with the brown leather sofa you’ve invested in, and there is no way it’s leaving? Ahhh..the gray and chocolate dilemma.

But is it really a dilemma? Gray and chocolate is a color combination seen in nature. Think of the black sand beaches or the trunks of maple trees. If creation has this color combo, then why are we so culturally worried about combining the two? No worries! Thanks to today’s trends and products available, it is quite okay to combine the two colors which we were once forced to choose between. When combining the two, keep the following in mind:

Choose One Dominant Color
It’s a good idea to choose one dominant color, in this case, gray or brown.  Allow the dominant color to be in ⅔ of the room while the secondary color is in the remaining ⅓ of the room.

Keep a Consistent Undertone
Not all grays have the same undertone.  There may be a brown, olive or purple hue to the gray. It’s important to keep the undertones in your grays consistent as well.

Pull It All Together
Choose 3 to 5 key items to pull the color scheme together. Throw pillows, lamps, rugs, ottomans and small accents are all easy ways to create harmony.

Moxii's Tia Throw in chocolate is a great addition to a couch or chair.

Moxii's Charcoal Vivacious Hook Rug combines both gray and chocolate in its design.

Stick with Your Style
Most of us have settled into a design style we feel represents who we are as a person. Don’t compromise your style when combining gray and brown or any color scheme for that matter. Stick to who you are and the style you appreciate.  Keep in mind you will see the perfect shade of gray accessory, but this doesn’t mean that lamp is the perfect fit for your space.

Use various shades of chocolate accents within your style against a gray backdrop.

We love Washington, D.C. for its great mix of Northern and Southern style — and we love Emily Wall, the blogger behind DC Here Now for capturing the eclectic style of the city’s residents.

We were so inspired by Emily’s photos that we asked Birmingham-based home decor store and online boutique Moxii to put together three bedrooms based on some of our favorite shots from DC Here Now. Were they up for the challenge? You better believe it!

White Peach Sangria

We are delighted to have Jewel Hazelton of Eat.Drink.Shop.Love. share her Sangria Recipe. This is the perfect, refreshing drink for a summer evening. Plus, it will look great in our Sangria Pitcher.

—-

The inspiration behind this recipe came to mind last week when my peaches were about to go bad. I didn’t want the labor of making a peach cobbler, and I knew I would be entertaining guests over the weekend.

See the recipe below.

Peach Sangria

  • 1 bottle of Moscato d’asti Wine
  • 1/2 cup of Peach Schnapps (DeKuyper)
  • 2 large peaches sliced or 4 small peaches sliced
  • 1 large diced mango
  • 3 strawberries sliced
  • 1 apple sliced
  • 1 orange sliced
  • 2 mint sprigs
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 lime
  • 1 large pitcher
  • 3 handfuls of ice

How to Prepare

Pour the bottle of wine into the pitcher, then add the peach schnapps. Add the honey to the juice mixture. Stir for a few seconds. Then add the peaches, mango, apple, orange, and strawberries to the pitcher. Next, add the juice from 1 lime and 1 lemon to the mix.

Add the mint sprigs to the pitcher.

Cover the pitcher and place it in the refrigerator to chill for 2 hours.

Serve over ice and add lime slices as a garnish.

After enjoying your drink, be sure to eat the fruit, because it will have absorbed all of the flavors. Yum!

Outfit to Room

We at moxii encourage you to reflect your personality in your bedroom style, whether it’s soft florals or pops of bold color.

We asked Brittany, our social media girl, to create an outfit, which reflects her personal style and translate it into her dream bedroom with moxii.

Outfit to Room

Her Take On “Outfit to Room”

In clothing, I am drawn to feminine styles and vintage floral patterns. I also love anything trendy. Lace is very popular right now. I am not much of an accessory girl, but I do like small earings and a scarf. To me, they serve as the perfect pieces to complete an outfit. I also like solids in an outfit because they are great basics. By mixing and matching scarves and cardigans, you can create different looks and multiple outfits. If you couldn’t tell, I like practicality, too.

If I could live in a dream world, I would have a clean, crisp room with a soft cream or white quilt and pops of color with decorative pillows. However, I have a cute little dog who likes to cuddle in the bed; so for now, I’ll just keep dreaming.

My dream bedroom would have a solid quilt, and I would add my personal style with the pillows. This way, I could easily change the look by adding pillows and throws. Affordable, practical, and fun! What can I say?

Even if I can’t have my white dream bedroom now, I can still have fun with decorative pillows like the Pink Back Bay Pillow.

Hope you enjoyed my take on “Outfit to Room.”

A Neighborhood Vintage Friend

Zoe's charming storefront

Recently moxii had the privilege of meeting some fellow lovers of old at a local Birmingham consignment boutique- Zoe. Their mantra of “Timeless Style, Modern Soul” marks the heartbeat of both Zoe’s and moxii’s personalities. For that reason, our team decided to walk along with the très chic crew to get a little glimpse of just what they do.

Before we set foot in the wonderfully eccentric store, we had the opportunity to chat with Ms. Deborah Bashinsky , founder and owner of the Zoe shop.  When inquiring how the store came to be she laughed and casually said, “We went shopping at the store [before it carried the name Zoe's], and I saw a for sale sign in the window.  I bought it on the spot- basically some racks and a computer.”  Starting over with the bare essentials, the grassroots shop found its feet in 1997.  Making her entrepreneurial debut, Deborah boldly planted herself in the world of resale aiming to blend contemporary and antique.

Deborah chose the name Zoe because its Greek root means “the creative spirit of life,” symbolizing her aim for the quaint cache.  The proud owner enlightened us of the distinct attitude of the resale world. “It’s really organic. We just adjust and make it work out. It’s our cats [Willow and Jade live who live in the shop], the music, the whole atmosphere,” Deborah adds with a lingering note of simple satisfaction.

The market for consignment has grown so much in recent years allowing Deborah to grow her collection. She acquires pieces from all avenues.  She travels to market in Atlanta in order to keep her accessory supply fully stocked with hosiery, hats, and a host of other treasures. People also call in about their own collections. She passionately divulges, “That’s when the treasures are found!” following an anecdote about one of her favorite items, the cherished hand-tied bow-ties.

Zoe’s crew echos the relaxed approach of the business attracting a “sweet and spicy kind of person,” as Deborah puts it. The five on board, plus a few lending a hand a few weekends a month, keep the show going everyday. You read right, they’re open seven days a week for your scavenging pleasure {Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday 1pm-5pm}.  As if that weren’t enough, every third Friday of each month Forest Park Village, the neighborhood Zoe’s calls home, hosts an open party for all to come and enjoy. For local Birmingham followers, you must see for yourself!

Now that you’ve got the scoop on this eclectic emporium, we’re sure you could only want more.  So we suggest you see their homepage and blog, then like their Facebook, and follow them on Twitter. We hope their story has inspired a least a hint of spontaneity in your creativity.  Zoe’s beginnings parallel that of moxii’s: essentially an overnight business sparked by a whim, resulting in a priceless continuing journey.  Ms. Bashinsky stated it plainly, “Sometimes you just have to step out there.”  So let us say on behalf of the Zoe boutique and moxii alike, go for it… whatever “it” is for you.

We put together this little collage to give you a taste of the beauty Zoe embodies, blending the timeless and the modern as their motto promises.  This same craft is likewise cherished by moxii in our room designs; hence why we can’t help but love Zoe.  Just take a look, and you’ll fall head over heals for the Zoe flair. We sure did.
