Budget-Friendly Fall Decor

Whether you are on a budget or not, it’s okay to re-purpose a few things within your home for fall decor.

Vintage vases or milk bottles of all shapes and sizes filled with decor from your yard are inexpensive and provide a unique look.  Sticks, acorns, branches of turning leaves and even goldenrod’s can be beautiful in a vase.

Below is a table designed by our interior designer, Katherine Bailey, in her home which was featured in last year’s Birmingham Magazine. Katherine mentions that teal is a trendy color this year and can easily be transitioned into Christmas by adding cypress, magnolia and ornaments on the limbs.

Here’s our fall, budget-friendly inspiration board- think vintage, chic with a touch of nature

Fall Inspiration: For the Table & Mantle

We love Pinterest! Do you? With the new season in full swing, we are loving using Pinterest as a way to keep up with all of our wonderful inspirations as we browse our favorite blogs and sites.

One of our favorite ways to decorate for fall is by using gourds and pumpkins. A collection of gourds is a beautiful base for any fall decoration, and you can use them in wonderful recipes when the time comes.  Ten to twelve gourds combined with fall foliage can become an elegant but natural centerpiece or mantle decoration.

Also, keeping your fruit bowl stocked with fall fruits and veggies can be an item of decor for your kitchen counter or table.

Fall Party Planning Ideas

Hopefully, you have been following my blog series, “Transition to Fall in 10 Days.” I thought that I’d share with the moxii readers the final day of this transition.

Your home is now clean, your closet is dressed appropriately, your pantry and fridge winterized and your mantle and porch decorated with the season of fall in mind.  It’s now time to plan a gathering/party/dinner.  Fall is a fabulous time to gather with friends and family  to enjoy all that is going on.  Clark and I enjoy hosting parties and gatherings at our house and look forward to the few events we have scheduled for the next month or so.  Fall gatherings do not have to be stressful, upscale or expensive.

Here are a few ideas to spur on the hostess in you.

Adult-Only:

  • Dinner Party
  • Costumes and Cocktails

Last Minute:

  • Picnic
  • Backyard Tailgate
  • Football Party

Family Friendly:

  • B.Y.O.P. (Bring Your Own Pumpkin) Carving Party – set up a table per family in the backyard and have a competition with a time limit on carving a pumpkin per family (Photos coming soon of this event at the Bailey house!)
  • Family Costume Party – each family dresses up as a famous family
  • Children’s Pilgrim and Indian Lunch – invite children to come dressed up as a Pilgrim or Indian and serve a simple kid-friendly meal

Fall Decorating for Mantle & Hearth

We are on Day 6 of “Transition to Fall in 10 Days.” I thought I’d share with you today’s task. Why? Because it’s fall decorating!

Now that we are halfway through, the fun part begins. It’s time to dress up our homes with the season of fall. You may be thinking, “WHY?” Why would I spend an afternoon getting out pumpkins, leaves, and buying mums?

In my opinion, it’s about soaking up the creation we are surrounded by. God has given us this transition season between summer and winter. It’s a season of beauty; just look at the leaves. It’s a time of family gatherings and Thanksgiving. It’s a time to play outside, while it’s not 95 or 30 outside.

Having my mantle, porch, table or door covered with fall is a small reminder to me with each pass by how magnificent our Creator is and how his beauty comes through to us.

A couple of places in the Bailey home that were chosen to display the fall creation:

The Mantle:

I choose to use use pumpkins and gourds of all sizes and shapes plus magnolia from the yard and a few orange boas.  I layered the boas on the very bottom, then the magnolia and then arranged the gourds on top.  If I find them, then I will add a strand of small white Christmas lights under the magnolia.

The orange ceramics are jack-o-lanterns turned around backwards.  I enjoy the height, consistency, and the clean lines of the lanterns mixed with the live greenery and pumpkins.

The Hearth:

The arrangement of the hearth was inspired by these pots I spotted at Hobby Lobby a few days ago.  I love the color, the shape and I am needing to bring in some hints of mod into my living room.

Shepherd and I enjoyed planting these pots. One thing I have learned from my mom about planting/gardening is to always mix plants of different kinds in one pot.

Choose plants of varying heights, shapes and colors.  This adds variety for the eye.  I added a few ornamental gourds to the pots for a little extra fall feeling.

Make it kid-friendly:

Give the kids two buckets, some dirt and a small shovel or and have them scoop dirt from one bucket to another while you work on your pots.  They will probably get a little on their clothes and maybe a eat a little, too, so be sure not to give them potting soil with a fertilizer in it.

Transition to Fall in 10 Days

Yes, fall is in the air… finally!  We are all enjoying our mornings and evenings outside, seeing the leaves begin to change, feeling the cooler air setting in. But as we step inside, our moods change; we are not sure what season it is because our homes still look like summer time. It’s time to transition to fall!

Join the Bailey family as we transition our home, family and attitudes towards one of harvest, colorful leaves, and Thanksgiving – for all the many blessings we have been given. I will be blogging the next 10 days on ” How to Transition to Fall in Ten Days.” Each day will focus on one area of the home/family and how to transition that area into fall.

day 1: Deep Clean
day 2: Wardrobe Switch
day 3: Stock Up
day 4: Measure & Scoop
day 5: Think Orange
day 6: Mantle & More
day 7: Porch & Pumpkins
day 8: Rake & Hoe
day 9: Cut & Glue
day 10: Plan & Party

I am excited about this undertaking for our family and even more excited about sharing this venture with all of you.  Enjoy!

Fall in Love with Green: Our Eco-friendly Glassware

Going green is easy, but you can’t change your entire lifestyle overnight. However, you can take baby steps. For instance, you can recycle all those canned sodas that you drink from or car pool to work. Small steps eventually add up and make a huge difference.

Now, we haven’t gone completely green, but hey, we’re making small steps with you. Below are some of moxii’s glassware all coming from recycled glass.
