DIY: Crochet Inspiration Board

One of the most interesting and popular DIY projects we have featured is the coffee bag headboard. Coffee bean bags and burlap are all the rage right now. But for those who want a more feminine look, we have another project that can be used as either a memo/inspiration board or headboard.

Currently, moxii’s interior designer, Katherine Bailey, has both! She recently finished this project for both her work area in the design studio and headboard for her master bedroom.

Here are the steps below:

Materials:

Instructions:

  • Cut the foam board the length you desire.
  • Lay the canvas over the foam board, making sure that it covers the entire board and can be wrapped around it to be stapled. Cut any excess fabric.
  • Smooth out the canvas and start first at one side of the canvas, stapling it into the board
  • Be sure to neatly fold the edges of the canvas. Securing it with your hand, staple the fold. Staple rest of sides.
  • Stretch the crochet fabric over the board, making sure that it wraps around the board. Cut any excess fabric.
  • Staples edges of crochet into board; also neatly folding the corners and securing them with staples
  • Now secure wire onto back of board for hanging. See video tutorial here.

DIY: Simple as 123

As the weather gets warmer, finding motivation to tackle projects around the house is much easier. While you’re spring cleaning and reevaluating the look of your space, think of ways to reuse the items you already own, rather than buying new ones.

With fresh fabric, the look of your dining room chairs will be transformed as well as the entire space. This project is as simple as 123. Check out the steps below.

DIY: Garland o’ Hearts

In our last post, we shared with you various Valentine’s projects that we found while scouring Etsy.com. We chose to do the Garland o’ Hearts.

Here’s how we created it by using materials that we already had at home.

Materials

* You will need hard stock paper, so use magazines from recycled paper (or any other material that bends and keeps its shape).

Directions

1. Cut strips of hard stock paper of the same size.

2. Punch a small hole at the top of a strip, looping a piece of yarn through it. This will serve as the stem of the heart.

3. Choose two strips of paper for the outer body of your heart. We chose the most colorful ones because these are the pieces that are most seen. Staple these pieces at the top of the stem, leaving just enough room at the top for the loop.

4. Use 3 more strips on each side varying in lengths to create a layered look. You will need to cut these strips to make them shorter than the one above it. Staple the two matching strips at the top and then staple all 4 at the bottom. This will make it look less messy rather than stapling at the bottom for each strip.

5. Repeat these steps to make as many as you’d like. We made 5. (An odd number tends to look the best.)

6. Using a long piece of yarn, stagger the hearts on the string and secure them by tying the loop onto the string.

7. Using push pins or nails, you can now hang your Garland o’ Hearts.

Chair Makovers: Thrift Store Treasures

Not many people can see the beauty in old furniture like Stephanie Drake of Proper Measures. She transformed her loft, which also serves as her office with a few finds from thrift stores and Craigslist. With an eye for design, Stephanie shares her chair makeovers with us. We hope you enjoy!

________________________________

I found this chair for only $30 on Craigslist, and it was in great condition as well.

This one, I completely reupholstered.  I stripped the velvety avocado green fabric off and used that to make a pattern with my new, more modern printed fabric.  I painted the wood a glossy white, recovered the cushions and then added a gunmetal nail head trim all around to hide my imperfect stapling job (I am a novice after all).

I LOVE the outcome!

I also found these chairs at the thrift store. I purchased both for $10. Although these chairs look like they are for the outdoors, I love the round backs; I decided I could make some cushions for them and use them in my office.

A couple coats of (you guessed it) white paint and some easy cushions later, I have new chairs for clients in our home office.

I found another Craigslist gem when I came across 6 Federal style chairs with ugly, floral seat cushions. A flip and a quick change with some bold fabric, a staple gun and a coat of glossy paint, and I transformed 4 of the chairs to use at our dining room table.

I painted the other 2 a high gloss turquoise and covered the seats in a buttery white leather. I used these in our den area. I am not afraid of color… can you tell? :)   Tompkins, our kitty, clearly is a fan.

The coffee table is another thrift store find at only $7. I added a white coat of paint and ta-da!  The sofa was a cool $89 on Craigslist, and I am in love with it.

Sometimes the beauty in a piece of furniture is hard to see. However, with a little patience browsing the internet or thrift store, you may just come across a wonderful find like Stephanie did. Add a coat of paint and a fun pattern, and you’ll have a piece of furniture that is fresh and modern.

Decor from Your Yard: Holiday Table Scape

Magnolia, driftwood, and limbs- who would think that items from your yard could make such a sophisticated and beautiful setting for your holiday table?

We love our holiday decorating series “Decor from Your Yard” for so many reasons! It’s affordable, easy, and creative.

Another setting used in the Birmingham Magazine feature was this table scape crafted by Katherine Bailey. She used magnolia and cypress from her back yard to trail along the center of the table. The two vases became the focal pieces with rustic ornaments hanging from limbs that were placed in the vases. The pop of color from the turquoise vases and the white driftwood makes you begin dreaming of a white Christmas.

The look is simple, green and non-traditional.

For a list of items, how-to instructions and complete table scape, visit the Birmingham Magazine article here.

Driftwood and ornaments are available in the retail store. Call 1-888-mymoxii to order.

Take a look at how Kelley from Eclectic Owl used the angel ornament as an accessory on her wreath here.

Moxii’s Winter Workshop Series

If you’re a fan of moxii, whether on Facebook or Twitter, we’re sure you have heard the Winter Workshop buzz. We hosted the first workshop a few weeks ago, and it was a blast! (See pictures here.)

Why did we decide to host these workshops? We know there is definitely not a deficit of projects for you to find on various blogs and do on your own at home.

However, we know that projects can be intimidating to some. Plus, who has the time to go to Hobby Lobby to get all the materials? Then once you finally start the project, when you hit a snag, you’re left alone to figure it out.

With moxii’s workshops, we provide all of the materials for you. All you have to do is show up with a drink of choice and a friend. If you don’t think you’re naturally creative, then this is a great opportunity to learn valuable skills and knowledge from interior designer, Katherine Bailey. It’s a fun night out with your friends while at the same time getting your home ready for the holidays.

The workshops currently scheduled will be held in Birmingham, AL at Innovation Depot, home of our design studio, and Auburn, AL at the moxii retail store. We will be hosting Stockings from Scratch, Give Your Tree Moxii Style (ornaments) and Beyond Wrapping Paper (a class on wrapping presents moxii style).

This holiday season, create unique, handmade holiday decor for your home.

RSVP on Facebook and to secure your spot, register online here. Space is limited.

Decor from Your Yard: Candles & Place Settings

It’s the week of Thanksgiving, and most of you will be pulling out your Christmas decor the day after, or maybe you have a head-start already. Recently, our holiday decorating tips were featured in Birmingham Magazine. What made our feature unique was that we used various things from the yard to decorate.

Katherine Bailey, interior designer, used a simple piece of wood in a creative way.

The first way that she used it was as a candle stand. She cut pieces in varying heights and placed candles on top, which served as a beautiful touch to the mantle.

She also used pieces of wood, which served as place cards on the table.

Use what’s in your yard to create a one-of-a-kind look for the holidays. This look is understated and budget friendly!

How to Modernize Your Couch

Stephanie Drake of Proper Measures provides stylish designs to weddings and special events. The style is modern and whimsical.

While Stephanie often styles other people’s events, this time she took her expertise to her new home and work space, a loft in downtown Birmingham.

We are so excited to share with you a series of her loft transformations and hope that it will inspire you to be creative as well.

———————————-

I am a big craigslist scourer & thrift store treasure hunter, so most of my home projects are items I thrift or find, then give new life to.

We just moved into our new loft that serves as a live/work space for our event design business, so I have a million more projects planned for this place (just have to find the time in our busy schedules to actually finish them).

First, I found this beautiful camel back sofa on craigslist.  I loved the shape & the color, and it was in amazing condition; I just wanted it to look more modern, so I painted the dark brown wood white (you will soon see that my modern solution for most items is to slap a coat of white paint on it, haha).

I get too excited & forget to a take real BEFORE pictures a lot of the time; I am working on this. ;)  But I do have the actual  craigslist picture and the ones I took right after I started painting:

Almost Finished

Totally Transformed

And, the ugly duckling turned into a beautiful white swan!

We have this sofa in our consultation area, which is sort of a Hollywood Regency style sitting room. It’s one of my favorite spots in the loft.

Stay tuned for my reupholstering projects!
