We’ve been meaning to share Shawna’s (of Styleberry blog) bathroom makeover with you. Her inspirational piece was moxii’s Tucker Green Shower Curtain – a color sure to brighten your mood and space!

We no longer carry that particular green. However, three new colors in blue, pink, and green are arriving any day now! For a more simple look, the white one will do the trick. The beautifully detailed, large ruffles provide sophistication, and the various hues are fun!

We Love Your Style

We’re a sponsor over at KendiEveryDay, and we couldn’t help but share this wonderful style blog with you! Kendi first started her blog in December 2009 as a way to find her personal style. And we are so happy she did!

She inspires us with her clever, thrift finds and quirky accessories. She started a closet challenge in April 2010 called the 30 for 30 Remix where she picks 30 items and creates 30 outfits by mixing and matching what she already owns.

We just had to introduce her to you! So here’s a little Q & A with the inspirational lady. Enjoy!

Q: We love your style and so do so many others. How would you describe it?
A: Simple, classic, everyday girl.

Q: What are your 3 must-haves in your wardrobe?
A: Skinny jeans, red heels, fitted blazer. (Add a cute blouse in there and I’ve got a really cute outfit!)

Kendi's mother transformed this once long-sleeve shirt into a cute summer top.

Q: You find such great thrifted items. What are your tips for second-hand shopping?
A: Go frequently and know your stores. Some thrift stores re-stock daily, so find the times when the stores are freshly stocked and learn about their discounts. Many times a Monday will be 50% off all stock, or other types of discounts. It helps to know when to go. Know what you are looking for, I’m always on the hunt for interesting scarves or silk blouses, so I can usually spot a silk blouse immediately. Also don’t be afraid to try things and take a risk. See the opportunity in a piece, even if it might not be perfect. Some of my favorite pieces I was on the fence about, but I took the risk and it paid off.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given in starting your own business?
A: Don’t listen to anyone but yourself. No one else knows what is right for life but you. If you know something is right for you, go with it and go full force. You are the only one who can make it happen.

Q: What is your favorite room in your home and why? Is the style of your home similar to that of your fashion style?
A: Our living room is my favorite room of the house. Our couch is my favorite part — it’s the coziest couch, perfect for naps and movie watching.

"I think that my style definitely translates to my home -- it's comfortable and quirky."

Q: You also have started a photography business with your husband. How do you balance it all?
A: Well, we are still figuring all of that out! I think that when you start a business you decide that free time is now a luxury. But we love what we do, so it all evens out.

Kendi with her husband, Bryan

Q: What is your favorite moxii item?
A: I love the Aviary Doormat or the Summer Day Jewelry Holder. I’m a sucker for anything with birds.

Dorm Room Must-Haves

For those entering college for the first time, you are probably already preparing for your dorm space. We understand the importance of style in a room. After all, having a space that reflects your personality is what makes it a welcoming new home.

But what’s a room without functionality?  One of the most important aspects of making this small space comfortable is how you organize it.

Below are moxii’s must-haves for any dorm room:

1. Bed Risers & Bed Skirt- Bed risers allow for ample space to store items. They will give you at least 24 inches of extra space. Place storage bins underneath and use an extra-long bed skirt between 24 and 30 inches in length to hide risers and storage containers.

View moxii’s bed skirts here for an array of colors and styles.

2. Under the Bed Storage Containers - There are many options for storage bins. Look for practical ones rather than stylish. They will not be seen, so opt for storage containers which are clear and serve as a drawer. This will allow you to see what you have and remove items easily. These storage containers from Walmart are affordable and practical.

3. Desk Hutch- Our custom desk hutch allows for empty space above the desk to be better utilized. It rests easily on your desk and provides space for all your school books and picture frames.  Call 1-888-mymoxii for more details.

4. Over the Bed Shelving- The over the bed shelving helps hide those ugly cinder block walls and allows for even more space to utilize- great for a lamp and alarm clock. Call 1-888-mymoxii for more details.

5. Closet Containers- There’s nothing worse than a messy closet. Instead of tossing your shoes to the bottom, use a shoe organizer that hangs on the door. For smaller articles like socks and scarves, place them in a container like this one at the top of the closet.

6. Floor Covering- Decorative rugs, carpet squares, or bound carpets make an eye-catching focal point and bring warmth to cold, dorm flooring. Moxii has a variety of colors, patterns, and styles of rugs. Choose our cotton woven rugs from Dash and Albert for a soft feel. They are easy to clean; just toss in the washing machine.

See our selection of rugs here.

7. Bedding Essentials- Moxii’s team of experts suggest a mattress pad, allergen mattress protector and egg crate or feather topper for the bed. Although this seems like a lot of layers, they are essential for a comfortable night’s rest on the mattresses provided in the dorm.

Click here for our bedding essentials.

8. Stylish Laundry Bag- Our one-of-a-kind laundry bags are an essential for the stylish girl. Hang on the end of your bed to help hide the bed risers or on your closet door. Not only is it one of our most functional pieces but the most unique and stylish.

See all of our laundry bags here.

Hallman Hill: Capturing the Essence of Homewood

The welcoming side entrance

Moxii had the privilege of shooting the latest collections at a new development of luxurious condominiums called Hallman Hill. Located in the heart of Homewood, AL, Hallman Hill captures the essence of this quaint community.

Hallman Hill is set among all of the charm and convenience of Homewood and combines an urban lifestyle with traditional features. Our buildings are made to look old from their first day out of the ground. Each building embodies a Homewood feel that you can’t find anywhere else.”

The moxii lifestyle captured in the courtyard of Hallman Hill

Each building of the condo captures a different area of the city, which is reflected in its fixtures, style and colors.

Known for its picturesque homes, welcoming sidewalks, and its many boutiques and interesting restaurants, Homewood has it all.

Included in the city are areas with unique antique shops, art galleries, and local favorites like Saw’s BBQ and Fretted Instruments. These small businesses have been around for decades, proving the locals’ loyalty and support.

Setting itself more apart from other cities, Homewood also embraces the new like SOHO Square where exciting restaurants and shops are being opened.

Moxii also lives out this same mantra of combining vintage with modern. We appreciate timeless pieces that have been the inspiration behind our vintage style items, such as our glass vases, kitchen linens and quilts. Joining them with whimsical, decorative pillows and vibrant art, the moxii style is one-of-a-kind.

Coming soon to the moxii online store is our Stylebook including more of Hallman Hill and of course, our beautiful bedding. See below how we’ve combined the old with the new.

Jess LC Launches the “I Love You” Necklace

Jessica Constable is the jewelry designer behind Jess LC. Her jewelry has been seen in People Magazine on celebrities such as Ali from “The Bachelorette” and Sarah Rue.

With a growing and successful business, Jess remains down to earth and offers her business tips through her blog, MakeunderMyLife. Starting at the age of 15, Jess began making jewelry and soon realized that she had a nache for it. She is the perfect example of someone who has turned her talents into a full time job (and successful at that!).

Her jewelry is very versatile from day to night with delicate chains of gold or silver. The Franklin Collection is our favorite! The collection consists of several necklaces that have inspirational sayings, such as “Be Brave” and “Dream Bigger.” On the front is the saying in braille and on the back, the saying printed in English.

Her newest necklace from the Franklin Collection was launched just this week.

Perfect for Valentine’s Day, the necklace says “I Love You.” We love that you have the option to personalize the necklace with various stones or keep it simple.  A great gift idea for Valentine’s Day and really any occasion.

Decor from Your Yard: Candles & Place Settings

It’s the week of Thanksgiving, and most of you will be pulling out your Christmas decor the day after, or maybe you have a head-start already. Recently, our holiday decorating tips were featured in Birmingham Magazine. What made our feature unique was that we used various things from the yard to decorate.

Katherine Bailey, interior designer, used a simple piece of wood in a creative way.

The first way that she used it was as a candle stand. She cut pieces in varying heights and placed candles on top, which served as a beautiful touch to the mantle.

She also used pieces of wood, which served as place cards on the table.

Use what’s in your yard to create a one-of-a-kind look for the holidays. This look is understated and budget friendly!

Meet the Jewelry Designer: Rebekah Blocher

moxii recently just launched Rebekah Blocher’s jewelry line. The bohemian designs reminded of us the moxii style, and we knew we just had to share it with everyone. But who is behind this beautiful jewelry?

We thought we’d take a minute to ask Rebekah a few questions. Isn’t it nice to put a face behind the name?

Q: When did you first start making jewelry?

A: I have been making jewelry of all kinds for years…beading, metal smithing, etc. Six years ago, though,  I took a pottery class from this amazing artist in Birmingham named Donna Steele.  I wanted to learn how to make dishes but ended up using the scrap clay from the dishes to make jewelry.

Q: Is all your jewelry handmade?

A: It is. Every piece is hand stamped, cut out, painted, and fired twice in a kiln.

Q: What is your favorite piece that you’ve made?

A: There’s a round pendant with a bird on it that I really love. The design came from the pedulum of an antique clock that belonged to my great grandfather.

Q: What is your inspiration?

A: Everything. you name it. That’s why all the designs I use are so different. They don’t fit any specific genre. I’ll see some scroll work in the stone of an old building or a pattern on a manhole cover and think “that would make a pretty necklace design.”

Q: What do you do when you have a creative block?

A: First, Drink coffee. I live way too close to the coffee shop. I also spend alot of time at bookstores. It helps too to do something different for a little bit like crochet or collage.

Q: How would you describe your jewelry line?

A: Bohemian, eclectic, colorful

Q: What tips can you give someone who is an aspiring jewelry designer?

A: Do something different. Theres so much jewelry out there. You have to stand out. So if you’ve seen it before, don’t do it. Come up with your own technique and style.

The Mission
When I first started doing art shows I knew I wanted to use part of my sales to support a ministry. I love to read and at the time I was on a kick about Africa and several of the conflicts over there. I had just read Long Way Gone, Girl Soldier, They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky, and several others, and I decided I wanted to help a ministry in Uganda. I did tons of research on all the different charities working over there till a friend told me about Heart of the Bride. I called and talked to Tony, the founder, and realized they were the real deal. Tony and his wife Faith sold their home and used the money they made to build an orphanage. They now have projects all over the world. One of their most life-changing projects is a jewelry project called Back to Africa where women there use recycled magazine paper to make these amazing beads. It helps the women provide for their families and the proceeds go back to the orphans. We recently collaborated to start a new line for Back to Africa. We are teaching the women to do the pottery beads and so far it is going great. You can see their work and learn more about the project at www.backtoafricastore.com. Another cool part of this project is the little fabric gift bags my jewelry comes in, each one is hand sewn by a woman in Kenya who is suffering from AIDS. The money they earn helps them provide for their families and receive much needed medical care. The women were so excited to get the work; they sewed around the clock and got the first 2,000 bags done in a week! We are trying to get other jewelry designers and stores to place orders with them too so more people can have jobs.

The Ministry
An important part of my business is the fact that each piece comes with a scripture inscribed on the back. I’v heard from so many people stories of how God used the verse on their necklace at a particular time in their life. I once got an email from a woman in Iraq who received one of my necklaces from a visiting missionary. She said her favorite part about it was the “secret message on the back”.
