We Heart Our Handmade Featherweights

The Garden Dream Collection featuring the Dancing Dahlia Featherweight

We know you’ve heard the phrase “one-of-a-kind” when we describe our products, probably too many times! So instead of saying it once again, we thought we’d show you instead.

The process in which are unique featherweights are made is quite intriguing. Created in the cottage regions of India, the featherweights are hand-printed and made in the most ecologically friendly way possible.

Below is the process, which is called Kalamkari printing, the earliest and more complex techniques of block-printing on cloth using vegetable dyes.

All Natural Fibres, All Natural Dyes:

Vegetable and natural dyes are used in the printing process. Most natural dyes use mordants to fix color onto fabric. Only natural fibres are used for the hand-woven fabrics.

Preparing the Cloth:

Fabric is washed in a natural bleach and milk to help whiten the fabric and stop the dyes from spreading.

Hand-Blocking the Pattern:

Hand-carved wood blocks are used to print an outline of the pattern on the fabric with an iron acetate.

Setting the Dye:

Mordant is then applied with the help of a block to fill in the pattern. Mordant is a substance used to help set dyes on fabrics.

Before the Dyeing Process:

This is what the fabric looks like printed with mordant before it is boiled.

Dyeing the Fabric:

The fabric is boiled in coloring materials to bring out the desired color only in the area where mordant is applied. The use of a copper container brightens the color. This featherweight was dyed with red color.

Washing & Drying the Fabric:

The fabric is washed and dried. For each color this process must be repeated.

Making the Finishing Touches:

Gold paint is sometimes applied to the finished product. This is done using a wooden pen called a kalam.

White Peach Sangria

We are delighted to have Jewel Hazelton of Eat.Drink.Shop.Love. share her Sangria Recipe. This is the perfect, refreshing drink for a summer evening. Plus, it will look great in our Sangria Pitcher.

—-

The inspiration behind this recipe came to mind last week when my peaches were about to go bad. I didn’t want the labor of making a peach cobbler, and I knew I would be entertaining guests over the weekend.

See the recipe below.

Peach Sangria

  • 1 bottle of Moscato d’asti Wine
  • 1/2 cup of Peach Schnapps (DeKuyper)
  • 2 large peaches sliced or 4 small peaches sliced
  • 1 large diced mango
  • 3 strawberries sliced
  • 1 apple sliced
  • 1 orange sliced
  • 2 mint sprigs
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 lime
  • 1 large pitcher
  • 3 handfuls of ice

How to Prepare

Pour the bottle of wine into the pitcher, then add the peach schnapps. Add the honey to the juice mixture. Stir for a few seconds. Then add the peaches, mango, apple, orange, and strawberries to the pitcher. Next, add the juice from 1 lime and 1 lemon to the mix.

Add the mint sprigs to the pitcher.

Cover the pitcher and place it in the refrigerator to chill for 2 hours.

Serve over ice and add lime slices as a garnish.

After enjoying your drink, be sure to eat the fruit, because it will have absorbed all of the flavors. Yum!

We Love Your Style

We’re a sponsor over at KendiEveryDay, and we couldn’t help but share this wonderful style blog with you! Kendi first started her blog in December 2009 as a way to find her personal style. And we are so happy she did!

She inspires us with her clever, thrift finds and quirky accessories. She started a closet challenge in April 2010 called the 30 for 30 Remix where she picks 30 items and creates 30 outfits by mixing and matching what she already owns.

We just had to introduce her to you! So here’s a little Q & A with the inspirational lady. Enjoy!

Q: We love your style and so do so many others. How would you describe it?
A: Simple, classic, everyday girl.

Q: What are your 3 must-haves in your wardrobe?
A: Skinny jeans, red heels, fitted blazer. (Add a cute blouse in there and I’ve got a really cute outfit!)

Kendi's mother transformed this once long-sleeve shirt into a cute summer top.

Q: You find such great thrifted items. What are your tips for second-hand shopping?
A: Go frequently and know your stores. Some thrift stores re-stock daily, so find the times when the stores are freshly stocked and learn about their discounts. Many times a Monday will be 50% off all stock, or other types of discounts. It helps to know when to go. Know what you are looking for, I’m always on the hunt for interesting scarves or silk blouses, so I can usually spot a silk blouse immediately. Also don’t be afraid to try things and take a risk. See the opportunity in a piece, even if it might not be perfect. Some of my favorite pieces I was on the fence about, but I took the risk and it paid off.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given in starting your own business?
A: Don’t listen to anyone but yourself. No one else knows what is right for life but you. If you know something is right for you, go with it and go full force. You are the only one who can make it happen.

Q: What is your favorite room in your home and why? Is the style of your home similar to that of your fashion style?
A: Our living room is my favorite room of the house. Our couch is my favorite part — it’s the coziest couch, perfect for naps and movie watching.

"I think that my style definitely translates to my home -- it's comfortable and quirky."

Q: You also have started a photography business with your husband. How do you balance it all?
A: Well, we are still figuring all of that out! I think that when you start a business you decide that free time is now a luxury. But we love what we do, so it all evens out.

Kendi with her husband, Bryan

Q: What is your favorite moxii item?
A: I love the Aviary Doormat or the Summer Day Jewelry Holder. I’m a sucker for anything with birds.

Outfit to Room

We at moxii encourage you to reflect your personality in your bedroom style, whether it’s soft florals or pops of bold color.

We asked Brittany, our social media girl, to create an outfit, which reflects her personal style and translate it into her dream bedroom with moxii.

Outfit to Room

Her Take On “Outfit to Room”

In clothing, I am drawn to feminine styles and vintage floral patterns. I also love anything trendy. Lace is very popular right now. I am not much of an accessory girl, but I do like small earings and a scarf. To me, they serve as the perfect pieces to complete an outfit. I also like solids in an outfit because they are great basics. By mixing and matching scarves and cardigans, you can create different looks and multiple outfits. If you couldn’t tell, I like practicality, too.

If I could live in a dream world, I would have a clean, crisp room with a soft cream or white quilt and pops of color with decorative pillows. However, I have a cute little dog who likes to cuddle in the bed; so for now, I’ll just keep dreaming.

My dream bedroom would have a solid quilt, and I would add my personal style with the pillows. This way, I could easily change the look by adding pillows and throws. Affordable, practical, and fun! What can I say?

Even if I can’t have my white dream bedroom now, I can still have fun with decorative pillows like the Pink Back Bay Pillow.

Hope you enjoyed my take on “Outfit to Room.”

A Chat with Founder & Editor

With preparation of college in full swing, there’s nothing more fitting than talking with the one who founded the go-to source for “things every college girl should know.” From tips on writing a resume to style and beauty, EveryCollegeGirl.com will quickly be a part of your daily reads.

So without further ado, meet Kaleigh Rogers, founder and editor.

Q: When did you start EveryCollegeGirl.com?
A: I started Every College Girl on January 1, 2010, actually, which makes it very easy to track exactly how old the site is:)

Q: What was the inspiration behind starting it?
A: It’s a strange story, really. I’d been wanting to start a blog for awhile, but every idea I had was basically already covered. My boyfriend and I are long distance; so I was in the book store one day looking for a gift to send him in the mail and found a book called “Things Every Man Should Know” with instructions on changing a tire and mixing a martini. I thought to myself, this is what is missing for college girls! And the idea came from there.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with EveryCollegeGirl?
A: I love providing a resource for college girls, like myself. I know I read a lot of blogs out there and generally use their information to improve my wardrobe, style, schoolwork, and just my life overall. If I can be helping other girls in any area of their life, then I’ve done my job.

Q: You’re still in college yourself, will this site be something that you continue after?
A: I absolutely want to continue this beyond college, maybe even making a career out of it. Of course, I’d have to have lots of connections with writers who are still in college in order to keep the content current and relatable. No one wants advice on being in college from someone who graduated 10 years ago.

Q: What style tips do you live by as a college student?
A: Make every day a reason to dress up. You have your whole life to lounge around in sweatpants, why not take advantage of your youth and make an effort every day to look your best. Plus, you never know who could be watching, and with street style blogs popping up all over the place now, you might actually get props once in awhile!

Q: How do you keep a balance with school, your social life & the website?
A: It’s tough but, to be honest, I can only do it because I love it. I love to write, and I love the daily grind of editing the site and keeping things running. The rewards I get from girls actually reading and participating on the site far outweigh a couple lost hours of sleep :)

Q: For those aspiring journalists and writers, what’s your advice to others who want to start an online publication like yours?
A: Just do it! Even if you only have 1 reader a day, getting your ideas out there is so important. If the content is really good, the readers will come. If nothing else, you’ll end up with a nice portfolio to show potential employers.
