One of the best features of the room were the coffee bean bag headboards made for both beds in the dorm room. One bed was positioned like that of a day-bed or couch topped with plush, decorative pillows. The headboards completed the room with moxii style!

Recently, we received pictures from two roommates at the University of Alabama. With smiles from ear to ear, they thanked us for making their dorm room a “home away from a home” and a room that expresses who they are as individuals.

Check out the pictures below. You see that they coordinated their room with one another using the Damask Raine and Baize Green quilts.

They also added a touch of their own personality with custom window panels, monogrammed pillows, and original art work.

MyHomeIdeas was interested in Moxii’s “Back to School” products, so where better to shoot the Moxii style than at a college. We transformed a cold, drab dorm room into a shabby chic, comfortable space that even we, college grads, could see ourselves in. The dorm room makeover as well as tips from Moxii’s designers will be featured.

Below are a few practical tips for making your space functional and comfortable:

Make a Plan. Consider the layout of your room and the amount of closet space that you’re going to have. Before buying storage boxes that are way too large for your room, take some measurements and then look for the perfect fit for your space.  Also, planning ahead means buying ahead! If you don’t purchase these organization and storage must-haves before school begins, you may find yourself too busy and left with a cluttered room.

Don’t know your dorm size? Moxii has access to most major university dorm layouts.

Get Creative. Instead of purchasing clear plastic bins, consider buying storage containers and boxes that have a pop of color or cool design. This way they actually serve as an accessory for your bedroom. Not only are they functional, but help complete the look of your room, especially when matched with the rest of your decor.





Think Functional. We love using the most random items and making them functional, such as using a small pot for plants as a container to store pencils and pens or using a bench with storage space underneath.






Raise it Up. Use bed risers to create valuable space under your bed. Most dorm rooms have 18-inch bed height. Adding 6 inches gives you a 24-inch clearance and lots of space to add under-the-bed storage containers.

You Will Need:

2. Upholstery Nails – You can be as creative or as simple as you would like. Click here to purchase.
3. Scissors – These will be used to cut the coffee bags according to the different sections of your chair.

Just a Few Steps:

1. Place bag over each section of the chair. Be sure to mark on the material where the sections end and begin.
2. Cut where your markings are and tack along the edges of the material to your chair.
3. Tuck extra material at the bottom of the chair and secure with your upholstery nails.

That is why Moxii wants to provide a deserving individual with a $500 gift card towards a bedroom of their dreams and a free consultation for all the design decisions. Moxii specializes in creating one-of-a-kind bedrooms – quality bedding with layers, various textures, and whimsical pieces to complete a charming space.

Trips to antique shops and thrift stores must be on the agenda. Below are practical tips when scouring for the perfect items:

1. Keep an Open Mind. Have you ever been shopping with a certain item in mind? Sometimes while looking for that particular item, you will miss a really fantastic one right in front of you. Keep an open mind when shopping. No, you may not find a chair for your empty bedroom corner, but you may find a lamp that will look great for the living room.

2. See the Beauty. When looking at items, especially those with age and wear,  many times we don’t stop to see the beauty. The outdated bedside table you found would be perfect if it weren’t for that ugly, painted pattern on the drawers. Look beyond the ugly design and see a great table that could be painted to match perfectly with your bedroom colors. You may have to get your elbows dirty, but it will be worth it in the end.

3. Realize the Reality. Realize when shopping for your home or a particular room that you won’t find your home decor in one day. Don’t find yourself buying items just for the sake of filling empty spaces or walls. Be patient and only add items that you truly can’t live without!

4. Don’t Give Up. Too many times, we as shoppers swear off a particular store because we couldn’t find anything during that visit. Remember that these stores are constantly getting new items as people donate regularly. You may have been out of luck the first time, but the next time, you may find a treasure.

5. See it as an Adventure. Shopping for your home should be fun! Call a friend and drive around the city looking for stores that you’ve never been to before. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find when you aren’t looking for a particular store or item.
